The participants of the 2000-2002 FAS funded Arts and Heritage course interviewed many members of our community in the West Offaly area.

We felt that by recording the folklore of the area we are keeping safe our traditions and heritage for future generations. A lot of information has been lost with people who have passed on and we would like to keep on record as many of the old ways and customs as possible. We collected old recipes, cures, games and stories that have been passed down orally for generations.

Anyone interested in sharing their knowledge of times gone by with us to dropped into the centre between 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Monday – Thursday. The interviews took place either in the newly built Heritage Centre or in the person’s own home, whichever they felt more comfortable with.

We commenced interviewing on the 8th November 2000 and carried out over seventy interviews with different members of the community. All these interviews were then divided into their component parts and the results were then catalogued and indexed.

Among the categories indexed were: Industry, Bord na Mona, Life in the Boora and Turraun camps, the E.S.B., Gallen Brick, the Brosna drainage, Life in the old days, Schools, the GAA, Fairs and Carnivals, the Railway and Life on the canal. We are also interested in collecting local songs and poetry, local customs, old prayers and any other folklore of the area.

We hope that by putting thme on the website it can give people an insight into the history of Ferbane through their eyes and in their own words as spoken by them.

* Please note that a few interviews have been ommitted by those persons choice.
